About Judo

Judo is many things to different people. It is a fun sport, an art, a discipline, a recreational or social activity, a fitness program, a means of self-defense or combat, and a way of life. It is all of these and more.

Kodokan Judo comes to us from the fighting system of feudal Japan. Founded in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano, Judo is a refinement of the ancient martial art of Jujutsu. Dr. Kano, President of the University of Education, Tokyo, studied these ancient forms and integrated what he considered to be the best of their techniques into what is now the modern sport of Judo.

Judo was introduced into the Olympic Games in 1964 and is practiced by millions of people throughout the world today. People practice Judo to excel in competition, to stay in shape, to develop self-confidence, and for many other reasons. But most of all, people do Judo just for the fun of it.

Jujutsu (jūjutsu) also known as Ju-Jitsu, Jiu-Jitsu, or Jiujitsu, is a Japanese martial art and a method of close combat for defeating an armed and armored opponent in which one uses no weapon, or only a short weapon.

"Jū" can be translated to mean "gentle, supple, flexible, pliable, or yielding." "Jutsu" can be translated to mean "art" or "technique" and represents manipulating the opponent's force against himself rather than confronting it with one's own force. Jujutsu evolved among the samurai of feudal Japan as a method for defeating an armed and armored opponent in which one uses no weapon, or only a short weapon.

Because striking against an armored opponent proved ineffective, practitioners learned that the most efficient methods for neutralizing an enemy took the form of pins, joint locks, and throws. These techniques were developed around the principle of using an attacker's energy against him, rather than directly opposing it.

What Our Students & Parents Have to Say...

I've been practicing various martial arts for over 20 years - everything from Tae Kwon Do to Aikido, to Jujutsu, and now Judo. Not only is Judo, by far, the most complete, effective martial art of everything I've been exposed to, but this dojo is the absolute best that I've experienced. That's why I train here and why I bring my kids here to train as well.

This was my first exposure to any martial arts & while it was very competitive, they were still very welcoming to a beginning adult. It has a great family atmosphere and the coaches and families are very welcoming. Great people & great experience!
